Health professionals, employees and designated representatives may obtain the identity under 1910.1200(i) from the contact in Section 1.

SECTION 4First-aid measures

InhalationMove the person to fresh air. Get medical attention if coughing or breathing difficulty develops.
Skin contactImmediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Use the safety shower. Get medical attention immediately. Caustic burns may not hurt at first.
Eye contactImmediately flush with water for at least 15 minutes, holding eyelids open. Remove contact lenses if easy to do. Continue rinsing on the way to medical care. Get medical attention immediately.
IngestionRinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. If the person is conscious, give a small amount of water. Get medical attention immediately.
Most important symptoms and effects, acute and delayedSevere burns of skin and eyes; permanent eye damage; burns of mouth, throat and stomach if swallowed. Mist irritates the nose, throat and lungs. Vapor of the alcohol content can cause drowsiness at high levels.
Immediate medical attention and special treatmentImmediate medical attention is required for eye contact, skin burns and ingestion. Alkali eye injuries need prolonged irrigation and an eye specialist.

SECTION 5Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing mediaWater spray or fog, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical, carbon dioxide.
Unsuitable extinguishing mediaSolid (straight) water stream.
Specific hazardsFlammable liquid; flash point 97 °F (36 °C). Vapors can ignite at warm room temperatures. Fire-control water and runoff are caustic. Contact with aluminum or zinc in a fire area generates hydrogen. Combustion products: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, sodium oxides.
Special protective equipment and precautions for fire-fightersPositive-pressure SCBA and structural fire-fighting gear; chemical protective clothing where contact with product is possible. Cool containers with water spray. Contain runoff.

SECTION 6Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency proceduresKeep people away and upwind. Eliminate ignition sources. Wear the PPE in Section 8, including face shield and chemical-resistant boots. Responders follow the employer's emergency response plan.
Methods and materials for containment and cleaning upStop the leak if it can be done safely. Dike and contain; keep out of storm drains, sewers and waterways. Absorb with inert absorbent (sand, vermiculite, clay). Do not use aluminum shovels or containers. Collect in labeled steel or plastic containers for disposal. Rinse the area with water and collect the rinse water.
Release reportingSodium hydroxide has a CERCLA RQ of 1,000 lb. At 5% sodium hydroxide, a release of 20,000 lb or more of product in 24 hours is reportable to the National Response Center, 1-800-424-8802 (40 CFR 302.6(b)).

SECTION 7Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handlingUse with adequate ventilation. Keep away from heat and ignition sources. Ground and bond during transfer. Always add product to water, never water to product, when diluting. Provide eyewash and safety shower (29 CFR 1910.151(c)).
Conditions for safe storage, including incompatibilitiesStore in the original closed container in a cool, well-ventilated area away from ignition sources, acids and oxidizers. Do not use aluminum, zinc, tin or galvanized containers, fittings or tools. Protect from freezing.
Storage classification (29 CFR 1910.106)Flammable liquid Category 3 with a flash point below 100 °F (37.8 °C).

Persistence and degradabilityIsopropyl alcohol is biodegradable. Sodium hydroxide is neutralized in the environment.
Bioaccumulative potentialNot expected to bioaccumulate.
Mobility in soilMobile; fully water-soluble.
Other adverse effectsRaises the pH of receiving water.

SECTION 13Disposal considerations

Discarded unused product is a corrosive hazardous waste, D002 (aqueous, pH 12.5 or higher, 40 CFR 261.22). It is not D001: the product is a solution containing less than 24 percent alcohol by volume (about 13%) and at least 50 percent water by weight (about 80%), which 40 CFR 261.21(a)(1) excludes from the ignitability characteristic. Do not discharge to sewers or storm drains without neutralization and permission of the receiving treatment works. Manage empty containers under 40 CFR 261.7.
